Cultivate Aberdeen reflects on the end of another challenging yet resilient year!
Since the start of the pandemic we, as a small volunteer-led charity, wondered where the year would take us and how affected our plans would be to transform derelict space into hubs for community growing. The pandemic has since taken different turns, affected all of us in different ways, but it has only served to bring our community closer, strengthen our resolve and commitment, and highlighted the vital importance green space has on communities, the residents who live in them, and the wellbeing of all who share in them.
Yet, in the past year we have seen significant change thanks to our army of supporters, volunteers, and funders. In March 2021 we set about transforming the former St Fitticks’ Council Depot into a community garden which has since hosted over 92 events over the past year, including 72 Community Growing Days held biweekly. We’ve raised over £14,000 to invest into this space, into events and education, into accessible paths and growing planters, and into a digital platform which has helped us reach 3.3k users online over 4.4k sessions!
As we move into this new year we will continue to facilitate community growing, work with partners and communities, and have a greater focus on the wellbeing and positive mental health that can be harnessed through growing! We want to support the Natural Health Service and use food as an enabler to have wider conversations, improve access to safe outdoor green spaces, and work with link workers to socially prescribe growing as an antidote. We’re excited for the future campaigns to come and to share our research and journey.
As always this is an open invitation for you to come and join us, no matter your ability or prior experience. Enjoy the outdoors, grow, and meet new people and together let’s cultivate a kind, confident, and connected community through the power of food growing!
